Mood swings, feeling down or depression
- To increase your resistance: get plenty of exercise, sleep well, and say 'no' to things before they get too much for you.
- Addressing the cause directly: mood swings often occur after smoking cessation. In some cases it is possible to regulate mood by adjusting the dose of the patch or nicotine gum very precisely. If nicotine withdrawal is not the problem, consult your doctor.
- Diversionary tactics: in a depressive episode, techniques of this type are usually of very limited effectiveness. If you still want to try them, use the techniques to increase your resistance and those that aim at combating the problem at the same time.
